There is nothing more breathtaking than a statement floral roof installation to add the wow factor to your wedding day. Available in all shapes and sizes, a roof installation can completely transform a space and elevate your guests’ experience by adding mood, interest, texture, and glamour. Roof installations come with a host of challenges – both creatively and logistically. In this article –  Everything You Need To Know About Floral Wedding Installations from the team at Floral Architecture – we’ll provide some tips to consider if you would like a roof installation for your big day!

Firstly, not every wedding florist will be comfortable or have the skills to create a roof installation. If a roof installation is a must for your big day, make sure this is one of the first questions you ask your florist. Research online and find yourself a florist who has imagery on their social media of similar installations to that you are after. It has taken us years of experience and trial and error to master the art of hanging roof installations. The challenges we face as a florist can range from weight distribution, size and logistics, to rigging accessibility onsite. Every roof installation needs to be carefully planned out from initial vision to creation and execution. It’s not for the faint-hearted!

Secondly, you need to decide what the purpose of your roof installation is and how much money you are happy to allocate towards it. Bigger doesn’t always mean better, and it is important to understand the venue space and how it will be used and viewed throughout the evening. A roof installation can be as simple as textural foliage pops hanging over guest tables, to elaborate floral installations with integrated lighting and other fun styling elements. They can vary from very economical to very extravagant! Remember – more isn’t always more! Some of the most engaging installations we have made have been the simplest. When speaking to your florist, be open about what is most important to you – is it budget? The wow factor? Filling a space? The more information you can supply to your florist, the better equipped they will be to help you bring your vision to life and tick all your boxes.

The most common place to have an installation is above the dance floor. This is usually an empty space or taken up by lighting beams so can look empty and vast or busy and distracting. An installation fills the space and creates a beautiful photo opportunity for your first dance, cutting of the cake, and candid late-night dance floor photos. If a venue’s rigging setup allows, we love to hang florals over guest tables to create an intimate and immersive experience while freeing up table space for shared food plates or other styling elements such as candles. This is a great way of incorporating florals into your reception, without having traditional table centerpieces. If there is a rigging point, we can hang from it! So this gives us the opportunity to create unique and interesting installations such as photo booth backdrops, floating bar florals, and statements pieces just because we can!

Each venue will have a comprehensive guide to the rigging abilities of their venue spaces. It’s important to know the maximum weight each rigging point can hold, as well as the overall weight restrictions. But I hear you say, ‘I’m planning a pretty wedding, is it really my job to know about weight restrictions?’ And the answer is no, it is the responsibility of the venue to supply this information and of the florist to interpret it and guide you through the process and help you turn your dream roof installation into a reality, based on your vision, budget, and rigging restrictions. We can’t stress enough the importance of choosing a florist who is skilled in this area!

Before speaking to your florist, we highly recommend searching social media for roof installations that inspire you and note down what it is you like about them. Check out the website and social media of your venue for what roof installations have been hung before. And finally, ask your venue for a list of the rigging points to help gauge where you may be able to create some additional interest within the room. This is important because just because it hasn’t been done before, doesn’t mean it can’t be done! Who knows, you might be a trendsetter!
