Red is a passionate colour and a classic symbol of romance. Often in wedding ceremonies, however, which are perhaps the most special celebration of love, it’s not as popular as some of the more delicate hues. Every couple will inevitably have their own unique style and we always enjoy seeing a big variety of flowers and colours being used throughout the year, but we must admit we’ve developed a rather large soft spot for the not-so-soft red – it’s bold, punchy and so much more versatile than many would think.
For maximum drama and impact, we love bouquets that hero red. These are particularly suited to weddings on cool, crisp autumnal days, where deep russets and golds feature prominently in floral visions, just as they do on the changing leaves outside. There are lots of shade options to choose from during this season, from show-stopping burgundy ranunculus and cherry red amaranth and hypericum berry, to orangey-red spray roses and wild rosellas that have been touched by the gentlest hint of pink.

Complementing a vivid red bouquet with lush, dark foliage will provide texture and a little theatre too!
Adding a contrasting tone to this moody palette is another simple yet effective way to make a statement on your big day. Clean white is an inclusive and impartial colour, and while it favours no single hue, we think fluffy, full-headed white dahlias, pieris and charming vendela roses look striking next to red flowers in a bridal bouquet. So elegant!

While red is obviously incredibly vibrant and just stunning, it doesn’t always have to be the focal point. For a softer look in wedding ceremonies, we love pairing smaller red flowers with lots of greenery (the more the better, actually!). Some of our favourite and most memorable bouquets in recent years have featured the very best of Australian flora – masses of native foliage in dreamy, muted tones intertwined with brilliant ruby red flowering gum, banksia, king protea and bottle brush.

Strategically placing red blooms in and around other bold hues is a little more unconventional, though no less spectacular. Blues, yellows and pinks can instantly brighten up a bouquet and make for a really interesting and dynamic colour combination. It’s important to remember that there aren’t any rules when it comes to wedding flowers – half the fun is exploring your own aesthetic and experimenting with different shades and textures (even ones you hadn’t previously considered!).
