We have long been fans of Melbourne designer Gwendolynne and her vintage-inspired, incredible wedding gowns – and her brand new “Curve” collection makes us fall in love that little bit more.
Inspired by her own curvy brides to be, the designer set out to make a collection that was refined in cuts and beautifully designed for brides with a curvier body.
Adapting her old favourite, classic designs, which were originally cut in samples from size 10-12, Gwendolynne worked to tweak the pieces so each gown becomes accessible to every bride – right down to samples up to size 22. Instead of controlling the wear’s figure through corsets and heavy fabrics, the gowns in the collection are tailored so they embrace the wearer’s shape. There’s a sense of the romantic, of the feminine and of the beautiful, offering something for a bride that may not have been able to find a piece that suits her own 1920s Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Grecian style before.
The designer sharing of her inspiration “I have heard story after story about brides feeling distressed about wedding dress shopping and being turned away and told “there is nothing for you here” at shops that only carry sizes 6 and 8. At Gwendolynne the majority of our samples are size 10 to 12 but from years working so closely with brides I wanted to refine the cuts so that they honour and celebrate this often overlooked bride by addressing design needs I find are consistent with many clients such as arm coverage, tweaking cuts and details to flatter fuller busts, and special touches, like scaling embellishments.”
The Gwendolynne Curve collection, which is made to measure is available now.
