Ivy Wreath Centrepiece Tutorial

Decorating for your wedding day or bridal shower can be incredibly effective by using a few simple ingredients. Making use of lengths of greenery to weave ivy wreaths can create a stunning centrepiece!

If you’re fortunate to know someone with ivy growing wild in their garden, befriend them immediately! Otherwise, any foliage that is flexible will work and can create a different effect. Silvery eucalyptus would look gorgeous on a country wedding table, sweet smelling jasmine would look beautiful on a garden wedding table and ivy creates an Italian feel to our classic wedding table!

What You Will Need:

• Lengths of ivy (or chosen foliage). Try to find long lengths, but keep in mind shorter lengths work well too.
• Chosen ribbon (if you choose to use ribbon)
• Florist twine
• Scissors

Step 1. Once you have snipped beautiful lengths of ivy, pop the ends straight into a bucket of water. Ivy will last out of water a long time, which is ideal if you are creating these for your own wedding, as you can make them a day ahead. However, conditioning the stems properly will ensure they last as long as possible!

Step 2. Take a long piece of ivy and wrap it around itself, twisting it in and out as you go. If the lengths are long enough, you will be able to secure the ends by tucking them in. If not, or if you are creating a very large wreath, use your florists twine to secure the ends as you add pieces on. Wind pieces of ivy around until you are happy with your wreath. You can make them slim or thick, large or small, or a variation of sizes!

Step 3. Once you are happy with your ivy wreaths and they are secure, you can add ribbon. This adds a wonderfully romantic touch to the wreaths, especially if they are being hung as an installation. If you are crafting your ivy wreaths a day or two before the wedding, pop them into a shallow bath of cool water. Take them out several hours before using them to decorate, so that they can dry, and ribbon can be added.

Your ivy wreaths can be piled high as a table centrepiece, used as candlestick holders, placed around food on a feasting table or even around your wedding cake! They can be hung against a wall, from the ceiling, or from a branch for an outdoor ceremony. Let your imagination run wild, and use these gorgeous – and simple – wreaths, to add a lovely Italian touch to your day.
