If you’re a lover of blooms and are looking for some gorgeous floral details to add to your big day, why not make your own flower petal confetti? Use your favourite flowers or blooms that will be used in your bouquet, petals from your Nan’s garden or even the stems from a sentimental gift bunch. Such a simple way to add a special touch to your day, and to get your hands amongst the petals!
Grab some hardier flowers as fleshy blooms are best to avoid, and find a room where you can spread out, preferably one with low humidity. As a bonus, using handmade flower petal confetti ensures a biodegradable product which many venues prefer. This floral tutorial takes little time to prep, time which can be made up in hunting for gorgeous flowers and thinking of crafty ways to package your lovely confetti!
What You Will Need:
- Chosen blooms. Good options include roses, hydrangeas, lavender, herbs including rosemary and sage, gypsophila and larkspur. If you’re keen to use a particular species but are unsure as to how it will dry, simply to a mini test run, before buying many stems.
- Tissue paper (plus a large board or table) and a large space which can be left undisturbed. If drying blooms for confetti in large amounts, perhaps consider drying in batches, so as not to take up enormous amounts of space.
- Chosen presentation items. I made ours into mini flower confetti bon bons, using waxed paper and twine.
Step 1. Purchase or pick your fresh blooms to use, and ensure they are well conditioned and watered before beginning. Although you can hang flowers in bunches upside down to dry, drying petals individually is a faster way to work, and will allow petals to keep their colour well.
Step 2. Carefully remove petals from stems, taking care not to bruise each one. Once you have done this, spread them out into a thin layer over the tissue paper, and leave in a dry and airy space for 3-5 days. Check on your petals periodically to ensure they are drying well, turning every second day.
Step 3. Once you are happy your petals for your confetti are completely dry, you can either store them in an airtight container until needed (if you are doing this the petals must be completely dry), or mix together in a large bowl, ready to be packaged. Add in some gorgeous dried lavender or kangaroo paw for some extra colour!
Step 4. If the idea of mini flower petal confetti bonbons is right up your alley, grab some squares of wax paper and some gorgeous twine or ribbon. Simply place some petals in the centre of the paper square, roll it up and tie both ends. These would look stunning en masse or placed on guests seats, ready for sprinkling over the newly married couple in celebratory joy!
