They say you can’t go wrong with the classics, and when it comes to a groom’s wedding day look, that’s right on the money.
Are you struggling to decide on a colour scheme for your outfit? Or perhaps you just don’t know where to start. It’s time to consider the classic black suit.
The benefits are numerous. First and most obvious being that it takes all the hassle out of trying to colour match suits, shirts, ties, socks, pocket squares and lapel pins (not to mention the bridesmaid’s dresses)!
Monochromatic outfits employ the use of one standard colour throughout the look.
In a groom’s case, it’s more often than not – black.
But Oscar Hunt Tailors General Manager Chris Edwards says it’s ok to play it safe.
“It’s pretty hard to go past the classic black suit, particularly a classic black dinner suit with a crisp white shirt, black bow tie, black studs on the shirt and a white pocket square with a traditional fold,” he says.
“That’s a classic look. Even though it’s been done a million times in the past, it’s still such a great look.
“Personally, it’s pretty hard to go past that”
But when it comes to a “mono outfit”, Chris says navy is also a popular yet classic choice.
“With a mono outfit, if you wanted to mix it up and move away from that traditional black, we do a lot of midnight navy jackets with black trousers or even midnight navy suit with black shoes and black bowtie.”

Melbourne stylist Sally Mackinnon from Styled by Sally, says the best advice is “not to overcomplicate things”.
“Stick to one neutral colour and ensure that colour is included in your outfit’s accents like the tie, pocket square, socks, etc.
“Then when and if you want to add a colour, you can pretty much choose anything.”
She says she likes mono colours for weddings as the look is “less likely to date”.
So those wedding photos will still look good in 50 years’ time!
“That look will also work better with brides and their potentially colourful bridesmaids. You’ve got to consider your wedding party when choosing colours.
“Sticking to neutrals or a mono look is more likely to suit everyone.”

Carl Nave, from Carl Nave Tailors, says choosing the mono look ultimately depends on the type of wedding you are having.
“Mono is great for black tie, but if it’s a more relaxed affair, I believe you should have fun with colour, as long as it works with your skin tone and colouring.
“I am a big fan of the navy-blue suit, possibly with a subtle check, brown shoes and a soft pastel tie and pocket square.
“However, if you’re a corporate kind of guy and wear a suit every day to work, you probably don’t want to look like you’re wearing a business suit on your special day, so that’s when the mono look is best.”
“A black suit, crisp white shirts and black tie is super elegant.
“Just make sure you opt for the tux or a jacket with big peak lapels to distinguish yourself from your regular day-to-day attire.”
Ultimately, the classic black suit and white shirt is a win-win for any groom – it takes the stress out of colour-matching, provides you with a look which will stand the test of time, and most importantly, you’ll look sharp as a tack at the end of that aisle.
Ms Zigzag says: A perfectly fitted black tie suit makes any man look a million bucks! Such a handsome, classic look to opt for on your wedding day.
About Mr Houndstooth: I am a happily married man. I enjoy a fine whisky, a new suit and swashbuckling around town with my beautiful bride. Looking back on my wedding day always makes me smile, even though it began to rain just as I said ‘I do’.
