The second hair tutorial in our natural bride series (catch the first one here) is all about the modern ponytail. I love how chic this hairstyle can look, working with an elaborate gown or even more a simple style.
Gone are the days when pony tails were reserved for school girls with bows and ribbons. The modern pony tail is sophisticated yet romantic; a flawless look for the modern bride!
The gorgeous Katherine Eleyce (Ms Filigree) styled this shoot together with photographer Captured By Pavel, hair & makeup artist Brea Mulder Beaute and model Sarah G at Sydney’s Beachside Dojo. Sarah wears a beautiful vintage style gown from Gwendolynne with jewels from Glamadonna and a sparkling hairpiece by Bride La Boheme.
Brea Mulder Beaute worked her magic on Sarah’s hair and makeup and today, with Katherine Eleyce (Ms Filigree) she is sharing the step by step instructions for creating it yourself (along with with exact products used below!).
Lightly spray hair with thermal heat protectant and comb through.
Section hair from ear to ear & secure with clips.
Using the medium barrel H2Dx5 curling wand, and starting from the nape of the neck take a 1.5 inch section and wrap around the wand in a backward direction, away from the face.
Lightly spray with light hold hairspray and allow the curl sections to completely cool for a long lasting, luminous finish.
Without allowing the curled section to unravel, gently remove curling wand and secure curl to the scalp with pins and repeat on all sections.
Run your fingers through your curls to ensure they are separated and looking natural.
Create some height to the crown of your hair by teasing small sections. Firstly, separate your fringe or a small section from your front part which will remain out to frame your face. Clip that section out of the way, then you can begin teasing. Take 5-7cm sections from the front of your hair and gently backcomb the underside with a fine comb. Repeat this as you move backwards to the crown of your hair. Once you’ve finished teasing, lightly hairspray those sections just to hold in the teasing.
Flip your hair back and gently smooth out the front teased sections for a sleek finish. You will now have added height to the crown of your hair so it’s time to pull it back into a ponytail. Keeping your front fringe or separate sections out, sweep the rest of your hair up and back with either your hands or a brush (just be careful not to brush out your curls). For a sophisticated look, look at finishing your ponytail at the back of your head in line with your ears.
Once your hair is smoothed into place (both from the hair above and below where you’ll secure your ponytail – you don’t want the bottom sections to fall out) fasten your ponytail into place with a colour matching elastic. If you find you’ve got any bumps in your crown after you’ve secured your style, using a fine comb, gently smooth them out towards your elastic. Once you’ve happy with your style, lightly spritz your crown with a hairspray to stop any ‘baby hair’ or flyaways.
To finish off your ponytail, take a small section of hair from underneath your ponytail and wrap it around your elastic as many times as possible, then secure it in place with a hairpin. This completes the back of your ponytail which is a gorgeous look for any bride!
Once your ponytail is finished, unpin your front fringe section and smooth the hair into it’s natural part, letting it fall framing your face with soft curls. Your perfect ponytail is now complete!
