Valentine’s Day means many things to many people, and for a lucky few it also means the gorgeous surprise of a marriage proposal.
Brisbane north-side resident Barry John Freeme (BJ) decided he needed a little help popping the question to his girlfriend Carla Vincenzo, so he entered an Austereo radio competition and was the lucky winner of an elaborate ‘Decent proposal’ on the eve of Valentines Day.
Over the past two weeks B105 radio hosts, Labby, Stav and Abby, helped BJ plan the ultimate surprise proposal to his girlfriend. But this was never going to be a low-key event and the team worked tirelessly together to plan an unforgettable proposal, enlisting the help of a marching bag-pipe band, a cheer squad, a 30 person mob squad, a tv news cross and a $10,000 diamond engagement ring.
In true Cinderella style the event was planned at the clocks strike of 12 o’clock. Carla, the unsuspecting girlfriend, thought she was meeting her sister for lunch, but little did she know that something bigger and better was about to take place.
As the sisters walked through Brisbane’s King George Square they stopped at a lone busker. Unbeknown to Carla, the masked and cloaked human statue was in fact her boyfriend. Suddenly a group of strangers began joyously dancing in front of her to Bruno Mars “I think I wanna to marry you”, proceeded by a 12 man marching bag-pipe band and 16 cheerleaders chanting C-A-R-L-A !!
On a big screen TV above, local newsreader Bill McDonald introduced a heart-warming message from BJ to Carla. When prompted to turn around and look at the masked busker behind her, BJ revealed his identity and dropped to one knee to propose to Carla with a stunning $10,000 Argyle Jewellers diamond engagement ring.
As the crowd cheered and the Champagne flowed, the newly engaged couple embraced under the falling rain… a scene nothing short of movie-worthy.
Clearly still in shock but glowing with love and joy, i asked the bride-t0-be if she had any idea of where she would like to get married? “I think Italy. It’s where i am from, so it would be nice to be married there.” Her dashing Fiance agreed, “A destination wedding will definitely be on the cards.”
