Even on the gloomiest Western Australia winter days, Ella and Gen’s sunshine-filled smiles warmed everyone they reached. Their fun wedding brought all the party vibes and an abundance of love to celebrate those they love the most. This celebration was captured by Dylan and the team over at Partografia Photography & Film.
Ella and Gen crossed paths for the first time at their mutual friend’s 20th birthday. Gen had been good friends with her since high school, and I knew her through volunteering at university.”
Flash forward to the quarantine years, and it was the day after a two-week quarantine period when Ella and Gen decided to travel down to Ella’s parent’s house in Western Australia. What’s so special about this day? If you asked Ella that morning, she would say nothing… but a few hours later? “Gen said we were going for breakfast but had planned with two of my best friends to set up a secret proposal. Unlucky for her, I woke up at 6 am dying to get out of the house, and she had to try and stall me until at least 8. We finally pulled up to the beach and started walking along the grass, and I was thrown because I knew there were no cafes there. Just as my hanger was about to get the better of me, we rounded the corner to a little picnic set up, and Gen popped the question!”
Gen wore a velvet blue tuxedo from InStitchu, with black pants and a crisp white shirt. Her bowtie was from Peggy & Finn, featuring a gorgeous native Australian flower pattern. “The velvet jacket was a bit different, and the pattern on the bowtie was unique. I loved the classic vibe of a tux.”
Ella and Gen asked their closest friends to stand by their sides at the wedding party. They had a mixture of guys and gals across both parties. The guys all wore classic black tuxedos, while the girls wore their own choice of dress that matched the colour scheme. “The wedding day was the first day we saw the outfits together, and we were stoked with how they all fit!”
As a token of love, Gen’s wedding party visited Ella on the morning of the wedding to drop off a small gift from Gen. Starting off her day with a sweet, tender moment before the day got busy.
Ella chose an Aje mini dress with beautiful flower details, an open back with pearls, and fun puffy sleeves. “I went through a lot of different ideas and options before I settled on my dress only about two months out from the wedding. I loved the idea of wearing something short, floral, and fun that I could tear up the dance floor in.” She finished off her look with a pair of pearl-studded block heels with bow details.
Alisha from The Bohemian Flower Collective worked with Ella and Gen to create these vibrant flowers for their wedding—absolutely nailing the brief! “We told her we wanted lots of texture and vibrant colours, and she did all the rest. She was really creative with using the same floral structures in the ceremony and reception, so we got the best use out of them.”
The original venue Ella and Gen had picked out for their wedding cancelled six months out, and with the wedding fast approaching, they scrambled for a solution. Ella’s mum suggested they look at Little Creatures Brewery in Fremantle, and the couple fell in love instantly. “Little Creatures had a fun and laidback atmosphere and didn’t need much decorating as it was already so pretty. We loved the backdrop of the water out the windows during the ceremony and all the lights and plants during the reception. We also loved being in Freo, which made for such incredible and diverse photos as we walked around!”
At the ceremony, Gen waited at the end of the aisle with her wedding party for Ella to arrive. Once she was ready, Ella walked with her parents on either arm to an instrumental version of “Here Comes The Sun” by The Beatles, a song she’s loved since she was a child.
They wanted a personal, fun and loving ceremony to capture their essence as a couple. To do this, they included special people from their lives throughout the proceedings. Gen’s brother sang for the couple, their matchmaker Teegan read “Serendipity” by Becky Hemsley for them, and their celebrant Kirk wrote an incredible ceremony that perfectly highlighted the couple’s journey. They wrapped up the ceremony with some personal vows before swapping their I Do’s.
Neither Ella nor Gen wanted a very traditional wedding, but they did want to include their families as much as possible. Ella’s older brother was the ring bearer for the couple, and both her younger brother and Gen’s brother signed their marriage certificate as witnesses. They also gave their parents small gifts as tokens of love before the ceremony.
Dylan and his team from Partografia Photography & Film captured the day from start to finish. There truly was no better team for Ella and Gen on their wedding day, working well to soothe any pre-wedding anxieties they might’ve had. “Dylan and his team were excellent to work with. He communicated so well with us in the lead-up that we knew exactly what was happening and didn’t have to think about it at all. When the three of them walked in to get the getting ready pics, I was a bit overwhelmed; I think it made the whole day feel very real! Within five minutes of them being there, I had forgotten about the cameras because they brought such a relaxed, fun energy to the day. We have so many pictures, but we don’t even know how they got them because we didn’t even notice the cameras being there. The pictures and video perfectly captured our day, and we couldn’t be happier with them!”
One of Ella’s favourite details from the day was the flowers created by Alisha! “They added a beautiful, vibrant atmosphere to our venue, which meant we didn’t need any other decorations. We loved the bouquets and buttonholes she made us as well. We received so many compliments on the flowers!”
Their top five favourite moments from the day were:
“1. All the lovely speeches our wedding party and parents gave
2. Writing our own vows
3. Doing our first dance to a special song
4. Being able to have so many of our family and friends there – many who travelled to be there with us
5. Our big bridal party dinner we had together the night before the wedding.”
For their reception, Gen and Zia wanted a ‘share-style’ dinner menu. Little Creatures did a great job setting up three communal tables and a bridal table to give guests that warm, cosy family dinner vibe. Gen’s Nonna, Mum, and Zia made special Italian biscuits as party favours for the dessert bar, which disappeared quickly into happy guests’ stomachs.
Gen and Ella did practise for their first dance, but as soon as the first chords to “Kitchen” by Ruby Fields began, they immediately forgot. “We both loved the song and knew it would be the right choice. We had a lot of fun with it, and it felt more like living room dancing than a dance routine, but that’s pretty typical of us.”
Join us in congratulating Ella and Gen on their party wedding! May you both have many more fun years together. Thanks to Dylan and the team at Partografia Photography & Film for capturing and sharing this incredible day with us.
