Today we’re chatting to the wonderful Alex Stevens of Alex Stevens Photo about her journey as a wedding photographer, her documentary and photojournalism style, what sets her apart from other photographers, and how she makes that oh-so-important connection with her couples. She’s a lover of love and weddings, and her clients rave about her talents and positivity – which you can also get a sense of through her stunning work that’s featured in this interview, plus her words below.

Where are you based?
Melbourne.

What are your favourite local spots to take wedding photos?
Anything around Collingwood Children’s Farm, Abbotsford Convent or even Victoria Street. You have the juxtaposition of lush green gardens and the Yarra next to the restaurant lined graffitied Victoria street. I love it all.

How long have you been a wedding photographer?
Around five years.

How would you describe your photography style?
First and foremost I am a documentary wedding photographer, but with a flare of fun and spontaneity! I love capturing those subtle moments and expressions.

How has your style and approach to weddings changed since you first started out?
A lot! Ha. The more weddings you shoot the more confidence you gain. When I started out I think I tried to think of every little scenario and detail to capture. Now I know the couples who choose me base it on my previous work. It’s more about quality over quantity. I’ve always been a documentary photographer, so I feel like I’m just more refined, and I have a greater understanding of when certain moments will happen.

How have weddings changed since then?
A lot less cakes… It’s more about the cheese wheels, donuts, giant cannoli’s and macaroons.

What sets you apart from other wedding photographers?
I love my craft and I love, love. I’m in it for my couples, I’m there to capture this incredible day for you.  Genuinely grateful to be a part of their history.

What’s a typical work day look like for you?
Hugging my dog Duke, editing, walking, cups of green tea.

How early should a couple book you in?
At least six months out from your date, more and more people are leaving it later.

How do you make a connection with your couples? Why is it so important?
I put a big emphasis on having a connection with my couples. I believe it plays a huge part in how we’ll get the best photos. I usually meet my couples a couple of times before the wedding. Firstly to introduce ourselves, I want to know your story, how you met? The proposal, everything! The next time will be a month out from the wedding, so we can go over the run sheet and I can get an understanding of what is important to my couple on their day.

Do you do engagement sessions?
I don’t actually, but I would have no issue with doing an engagement shoot!

What are your favourite weddings to shoot?
The laidback less formal ones. The days run smoothly, it’s not about ticking all those traditional formal boxes, it’s about celebrating with your nearest and dearest!

Are there parts of the wedding day that stand out – that you particularly enjoy photographing?
I have two moments I really enjoy shooting.  Firstly when the couple and I get to wander off and shoot our portrait session. This usually happens right after the ceremony, so it’s nice to take that time and really let them take it all in. They’re on a high they’ve just got married!  They can take a breather from all the craziness and just enjoy some time together whilst I’m shooting away. Secondly I can’t go past the dance floor! It’s when I can really capture everyone letting their hair down and having a boogie. I always have a lot of fun when it’s time to shoot the dance floor.

Are you available for destination weddings?
Absolutely. I’d love to have the opportunity.

Top three wedding venues?
Collingwood Children’s Farm, Emu Bottom Homestead and Panama Dining Room.

The best thing about shooting weddings is…
Meeting interesting people!
