Byron Bay is a culture and arts hub. A big little beach side town like no other, brimming with the most creative, insightful, innovative and progressive artisans and creators in all areas. And when it comes to choosing a florist in the Byron Bay area, truth be told you are spoilt for choice. We were so excited to chat with two of the region’s best and most brilliant botanical bosses, the gorgeous Estelle of The French Petal and Jess from Poppy & Fern.
What 2020/2021 trends are you seeing in florals in beautiful Byron Bay?
Estelle from The French Petal says:
We are seeing dried or preserved elements and the use of grasses because they can be kept and reused. We are also seeing micro weddings which are intimate and less stressful, eco-conscious weddings using local grown flowers and herbs, foam free weddings (sustainability is important), and the reduction in arbours/arches for brides who are after something less formal.

Over all, the trend is that couples want their ceremony set up using the natural surroundings, using discreet metal pedestals, tone on tone, monochromatic palette, and minimalist table arrangements with one statement piece or a hanging installation.

Jess from Poppy & Fern says:
I’m seeing a big shift in couples being more aware and asking where their flower are coming from. I’m seeing a conscious move towards sustainably grown flowers and waste free design techniques. Also lots of interest in their flowers being donated or given away after the wedding day and not getting thrown into landfill.

What is your signature look? What sets you apart?
Estelle from The French Petal says:
Loose and naturalistic arrangements with interesting textures. I love foraging in my local secret spots! I love doing tailored weddings, with a different atmosphere and feeling each time. It’s fun to bring a creative twist to make it truly unique.

Where do you source your flowers from?
Jess from Poppy & Fern says:
Wherever possible, we use flowers grown here in our field or we will source them locally to truly infuse your love day with the spirit of Byron Bay. By the end of 2020, we aim to be growing 90% of the flowers for our weddings in our field. When we source florals, we always choose sustainable and locally grown flowers. Not only are they fresher, brighter and more fragrant, they’re also better for the earth and our brides than imported varieties.

What botanicals from the Byron Bay area do you use in your bouquets and décor?
Estelle from The French Petal says:
Lots of wild flowers including cosmos, sage, dahlia, zinnias, amaranthus, herbs, lots of foliage, plus sticks of some sort. I love this overgrown feel, wild looking and ‘misbehaving’ shapes.

Who are your favourite local Byron vendors? Give them a shout out!
Estelle from The French Petal says:
Byron is a beehive of passionate vendors. But to name a few; the legends at Frank and Joy, Roxy at Nofomoco Events, Kira at Creative Wedding Byron Bay, Belinda from Beach Byron Bay, Jane from Byron Bay Luxury Weddings, Emily from Elope Byron Bay. And we have a BIG floral community with kick ass ladies.
