Aloha honeymooners! Whether you want to sip Mai Tais as the sun goes down, float down rivers, shop, swim or surf, Hawaii has a honeymoon style for just about everyone. Here’s how to Honeymoon Hawaii’s Islands:
Oahu
Oahu is the perfect spot if you’re looking to kick start the honeymoon ASAP. One long haul flight from Australia into Honolulu and you’ll be on the beach in no time. Soak up all that is Waikiki Beach from the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa. The historic hotel sits right on the sand – spend your day on the beach and your evening in a rocking chair under the branches of its beautiful Banyan tree.
Stop by Duke’s for a Hula Pie before hitting Waikiki’s famous shops just across the road; Sephora and Victoria’s Secret, Macy’s, there’s even a Tesla store. Steer clear of the crowds by heading to the North Shore – grab a Jeep Wrangler and stop at smoothie shacks and food trucks along the way to pristine beaches. For a bit of adventure, a morning spent ziplining or horse riding through the rainforest at Kualoa Ranch is good fun.
Maui
Inter-island hopping is easy, with quick 40 minute flights between the mainland and Maui, and departures almost every half hour on Hawaiian Airlines. The resort-lined beaches of Wailea are perfect for easy snorkelling. When the sun sets, make your way through the Marriott’s manicured grounds to the dramatic fire-fuelled Te Au Moana Luau.
After a few days at the beach, hop in a convertible, put the top down and drive the island’s famous Road to Hana. Winding along switch backs, past thundering waterfalls, this three-hour drive passes through spectacular scenery – best enjoyed when you can tip your head back and look up in wonder. The laidback resort Travaasa Hana sprawls across the headlands just past Hana and is perfect for a private getaway.
Kauai
Known as the Garden Isle, Kauai is a beacon for nature lovers. The Napali Coast’s towering sea cliffs are dramatic from the sea or air – try a helicopter ride for a birds eye view or stick to the ocean and spot dolphins and whales along the bumping ride with Captain Andy’s zodiac tours. In the north, Hanalei Bay draws surfers from near and far. Hire a board and give the smaller waves a go for a couple of hours before heading back into town for burritos and a few beers.
Head into the heart of the island with Kauai Backcountry Adventures – their mountain tubing tours take you down old irrigation channels diverted off the island’s many waterfalls. Originally used to water the sugarcane plantations, they run straight through the forest, and are a very special way to see the greenery in all its glory.
Hawaii Island
Long known as the Big Island, because, well, it’s really big, Hawaii Island feels like another world – roads cut straight through black lava fields, the rocks towering high on either side of you all the way to the sea. Hilo is the best point for those looking to explore Volcano National Park, but for better weather, stay in Kona or Waikoloa and take a Blue Hawaiian helicopter tour over the smoking volcano fields.
Spend your day by the pools at Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa before heading down to Kona to swim with the manta rays after dark – with Anelakai Adventures you’ll head off in an Outrigger Canoe with just a handful of others and soon be out in the water as these majestic creatures whirl and twirl underneath you.
