While a sweet ring pillow is traditionally used during the wedding ceremony, a handmade and rustic ring pillow can also be used during a proposal! If you like to DIY and getting crafty, this sewing tutorial is perfect for you – and can be customised to suit your every whim!
Once you have chosen your fabric and ribbon, this ring pillow will only take minutes to whip up. It will not only look professional, but is heartfelt too and can be embroidered with a special date or initials. Whether it is used for your proposal or for a sweet page boy to keep your wedding rings safe, this is an easy project that will bring a lot of heart to your big day!
What You Will Need:
- Two pieces of square fabric, approximately 12cmx12cm (natural fibres tend to be easier to work with)
- Approximately 30cm of your chosen ribbon
- Hollowfibre stuffing
- Fabric scissors
- Needle and thread
- A sewing machine (this can also be sewn by hand)
Step 1. Place one fabric square on top of the other, right sides out, and sew around 3 sides, leaving approximately 1.5cms as a hem. I have used a contrasting thread colour, you can use any colour, or choose one that blends in.
Step 2. Use the hollowfibre stuffing to fill your ring pillow. Pack it quite firmly so that it will keep its shape. Once it is full, press the wadding as far in the pillow as it will go, to make sewing easier.
Step 3. Pop the cushion back under the machine, and sew along the fourth edge. Trim threads and redistribute the stuffing for a nice, full ring pillow.
Step 4. Thread your needle with thread to match the ribbon, and place the ribbon on the cushion. I have placed it slightly above the centre to allow the rings to hang in the middle, but you can play with placement. Firmly hand stitch the ribbon on and add any embroidery you would like.
Step 5. Trim the top piece of fabric around the hem (approximately 0.5cm) to create a pretty detail, and neaten any loose threads. Trim the ends of the ribbon, and hey presto! You’ve just made a pretty and rustic ring pillow, ready for those lovely rings!
