There’s not too many people who can resist a beautiful florist shop. The smells, the colours and the textures all mix together to create a delight for the senses, and this week’s store is a particularly special one! Fowlers Flowers was opened in 2010 after the owners of cafe, Mixed Business, decided to add a beautiful florist to the empty shop next door. The store has quickly become a one stop gift and flower spot for customers passing by in Melbourne’s inner city suburb of Clifton Hill.
I meet Crystal, one of the main florists who runs the shop, and she tells me that in previous lives the space has been a skate shop and a locksmith. There’s certainly no trace of that now with a big front window adorned with beautiful white calligraphy style patterns, lots of local pots and plants on display and a very inviting fragrance coming from inside.
As well as perfect posies and a wall of fresh blooms Fowlers Flowers also stock a carefully curated selection of cards and giftware. “We love to stock local pieces,” says Crystal; “things like Bon Lux candles, Yeshamac ceramics and tones of locally designed gift cards. It’s also highly likely you will see florists at work creating bouquets as well as arrangements for local cafes and restaurants and maybe even a wedding!
The space is also the prefect place to have appointments with brides and grooms planning their big day. “The shop is a great source of inspiration” says Crystal. “We can actually point out and show customers different types of blooms and get an idea for what they might like.” Fowlers Flowers can also create stunning bouquets and buttonholes to match as well as full venue flowers from the ceremony to the reception. I love their colourful, natural, slightly wild style and can see how they would be perfect for breathing a breath of fresh air into a wedding reception.
The cute shop is squeezed in between the cafe and a great local pub, which must mean staff are spoilt for choice between a morning coffee and perhaps a sneaky drink after work. Crystal tells me that many of their wedding couples become some of their best customers, coming back in to pick up flowers for home or that special anniversary gift. I love the idea of couples creating little traditions with their wedding vendors even after their big day!

Ms Chinoiserie Says: Such a pretty florist shop – the colours and textures, not to mention the fragrance, are so inviting!
About Amelia Waddell of Make Your Day Wedding Styling: I’m a wedding stylist and proud store owner who loves to chat weddings with everyone and anyone! I love to talk shop with other business owners (particularly over some chocolate cake!) and am the first to try and have a sticky beak behind the scenes of any event. My free time is spent ‘investigating’ new cafes, stores and events.
