This week on ‘Behind the Door With….’ I’m excited to chat with one of the friendliest photographers ever, Dan Brannan from Dan Brannan Photography. Based in Victoria’s beautiful Mornington Peninsula, Dan is happy to travel far and wide across Victoria, and even interstate, to capture the wedding days of his lucky couples in his beautiful, documentary style pictures.
Dan, who has studied graphic design and photography, tells me he first got the idea that wedding photography might be for him when selecting someone to capture his own special day. “It was a bit of a process” says Dan. “We wanted someone who wasn’t too into posed pictures, and had more of a photo journalism style”. Once he and his wife found the right person they were thrilled with the results and Dan tells me he started thinking “I reckon I could do this!”
As with many new business, Dan started out shooting a friend’s wedding and found that he not only loved it, but that he wanted to do it full time. Dan Brannan Photography was born and is now a thriving business that Dan runs from home with his wife. Dan loves to meet couples in person at a cafe but finds that more and more couples find it convenient to meet up with the help of Skype. “Lots of my couples are busy during the week and I’m often shooting weddings on weekends” says Dan, “so Skype can be really handy.”
At home, Dan has set up a studio office where all the editing, collating and creation of photo books takes place. Dan tells me this is a dream come true for him after many years working in a traditional style office. It means Dan can be around during the day with his kids and gets work done at night, which he admits is great since he is a “bit of a night owl.” I love hearing about how starting a business can mean you get to do what you love as a job, but also change your lifestyle.
I ask Dan if there’s anything new he’s excited about and he tells me he has just joined forces with another businesses we featured on ‘Behind the Door With….’, All Grown Up Weddings. As a member of such a talented collective I’m sure he is going to be one highly sought after photographer!

I love to talk shop with other business owners (particularly over some chocolate cake!) and am the first to try and have a sticky beak behind the scenes of any event. My free time is spent ‘investigating’ new cafes, stores and events.
