Jasmin and Jordy had been together since they were teenagers, and were married surrounded by hundreds of family and friends in an outdoor wedding on the beautiful lawns of Athol Hall in Mosman. On a sunny day, it’s a beautiful, peaceful venue. I got to experience it at its wildest.
We knew that rain was forecast for the day, but we didn’t know exactly when it would come. Shortly before the ceremony it started to rain, then it poured. The wind picked up and rain started coming in sideways. Sometimes rain even seemed to come straight up from underneath (to quote Forest Gump!) Even with an oversized gazebo, it was still getting in.
At Bright Day Films, we know there is a real conflict of interest when shooting in wet weather conditions. On one hand, we need to capture what’s happening, but more so, extreme weather conditions can make for some stunning and unforgettable moments.
In Jasmin and Jordy’s video, you’ll see that it opens with a scene of raindrops dripping down from a white gazebo. This was just after the storm had passed before the ceremony started. Later, you see a shot of the groomsmen trying to rescue part of the ceremony pew and getting soaked in the process – classic! These are the moments that you don’t want to miss. They are what make a great day, truly memorable.
On the other hand, videographers carry around a whole bunch of really expensive gear, so there’s a genuine risk in pulling out your camera in the wet. I’ve seen some do so at their peril. Fortunately, a lot of DSLR cameras these days are fairly rugged and are able to withstand a light sprinkling.
Like a ray of sunshine and thankfully just before the ceremony began, the rain stopped and the weather calmed down. It was spectacular. Raindrops dripped from the trees onto the grass. Jasmin walked with her Dad down the old stone steps of Athol Hall to a song that Jordy had written specially for her – a moving piano piece.
Story has it that thunderstorms featured at Jordy’s brother’s wedding, and also the wedding of his parents. Perhaps a sign of goodluck and blessing! After the wedding and before the reception, the storm came out again in full force; the rain pelted down, there was lightning streaking across the sky and it continued to pour wildly. And then, just as suddenly as it came, it was gone. As a videographer…. always expect the unexpected!
Ms Chinoiserie Says; Wow Jesse, you certainly have captured some amazing footage; filming in the wet can indeed lead to some treasured, memorable moments!
