Milly and Mark were thrilled to find out they were expecting ‘Baby Number Two’, even though it meant Milly would be four months pregnant when they tied the knot, on the fifth anniversary of the day they first met.
While some brides may be tempted to postpone their wedding date, Milly and Mark embraced their exciting news and decided to make their vows, officiated by me at Brisbane City Celebrants, even more special by announcing their special baby news during the ceremony!
So after much excited discussion, together we came up with the idea to incorporate the announcement with a ‘baking ceremony’. I’m not your typical ritual celebrant, so I like to think of this as the ‘bun in the oven’ ceremony baked with love!
Milly felt including a ‘baking ceremony’ would also be a really special way to include their son Kirin in the ceremony while also giving incorporating her love for cooking.
The ‘baking ceremony’ involved Milly and Mark with the help of Kirin, pouring the ingredients of a happy marriage from glass bottles that Milly had lovingly themed into a large glass jar. As they poured, I explained what each ingredient symbolized:
- Starting with Flour: for a healthy foundation
- Sugar: for sweetness romance and happiness
- Guar Gum: to stop them from crumbling
- A Pinch of Salt: to symbolize their wisdom and friendship
- Walnuts: for laughter and humour
- Baking Soda: to help them rise above the tough times
- Cinnamon: adding the spice of life to their marriage
- Egg: to bind them together through the tough times, represented by Amazonite
- And finally, Butter: represented by the rose quartz to enhance all forms of love
Once all the ingredients had been poured, together this sweet little family lovingly stirred the ingredients, to represent their unity through both good and tough times.

Once the mixture was stirred, I explained to the guests that this ‘baking ceremony’ was particularly special to Milly and Mark, as they would like to announce something else they have been baking – to which Mark announced “We’re expecting a baby!” The surprised guests responded with roaring cheers and applause and happy tears were shed. Huge congratulations to Milly and Mark!
It was such a beautiful way to share the news with their loved ones and one of the highlights of their special day.
Ms Chinoiserie Says: Such a beautiful and heartfelt way to announce special baby news; the list of ingredients is so touching!
