Kelli & Alex
Kelli and Alex’s colourful modern wedding is sure to make you smile. From Kelli’s sparkly wedding gown to the plethora of colourful blooms dotted throughout the day. They wanted a beautiful, colourful wedding day with their family and friends and chose Nerida McMurray Photography to capture it all.
The newlyweds tell their story. “Despite growing up around the corner from each other and having mutual friends at school, Alex and Kelli first met working part time jobs in the menswear department at David Jones in between school and Uni. By chance, they were enrolled in the same uni degree at the same uni but half way through first year Kelli deferred to travel so they lost touch, until bumping into each other at graduation. They didn’t see each other again for 10 years until a chance meeting crossing the road in Neutral Bay. Alex was on his way to lunch with another girl, and Kelli pretended to be on the phone as she’d just come from the gym, but they got talking on the side of the road. They had their first date the following Wednesday, were living together within 5 months, engaged within 11 and married within 16.”
Kelli chose a sparkling wedding gown designed by Karen Willis Holmes. She wore a special piece in her hair, noting, “I loved my hair pin, it was a pair of blue enamel butterflies, originally a brooch my mum gave my grandma 40 years ago.”
Kelli and Alex were married at Vaucluse House – choosing the lawns for their ceremony and the tearooms for their reception. Kelli tells, “As soon as we saw the Tea Rooms we knew it was exactly what we were after: small, intimate and classic with a nod to an older world. Kelli’s Dad had suggested the venue and we later found out Alex’s Mum used to go there as a child – so it was special for the whole family.”
For the processional, Kelli remembers “Alex chose the song as a surprise – it was perfect – Over the Rainbow.”
Kelli describes the day as, “A day filled with our favourite people and bursting with colour, laughter and love.”
Of their photographer, Kelli remarks “Nerida was FABULOUS. We knew as soon as we met her we wanted her to be apart of our day. The first thing Nerida said to us was “tell me about you, what are you after”, and she really listened. So many photographers we met seemed caught up in over producing the photos and the event, whilst Nerida was focused on producing work that represented Alex and I and the type of people we are. On the day she was calm, patient and lovely to work with. She worked so hard, and brought such an energy. As for the end result, we love the photos, Nerida captured exactly what we were after! thank you!”
The reception celebrations continued inside the Vaucluse House Tea Rooms . Lavande Designs created bright and bold colourful arrangements dotted throughout the wedding, Kelli noting “I loved the flowers – having hyacinths and so much colour everywhere.”
Unique Cakes created a colourful wedding cake. Says Kelli, “We loved it – a simple chocolate and caramel tiered cake covered in 100s and 1000s.”
Jade Lumbewe kept the dance floor going all night long!
Kelli remembers one of her favourite stories of the night. “In a last minute change of plans, Alex and I decided not to go out after the wedding, the only problem was we hadn’t arranged any transport back to the hotel, and the bus we’d organised for all the guests had left without us. Vaucluse House is tucked away in the suburban streets, but by some chance a taxi appeared out of nowhere.. it was hysterical coming from a glamorous wedding sitting in a standard taxi. The funniest thing was the taxi driver, he didn’t say a word the whole drive, as though it was the most normal thing in the world for 2 people obviously the bride and groom to get into the car. Alex and I were in hysterics in the back the whole trip.”
