Over the years of photographing weddings, my appreciation for fellow vendors has continued to grow. When photographing the details, from the flowers to the stationery, I always think about the bride’s vision when planning, and the work and hours that the designer has put in to make those visions come to life, and aim to photograph it to do it justice. My mouth always waters when I photograph the cake. The wedding cake is one of those traditions that will always be there, but that constantly moves with the times. I love that! I have never been a personal fan of traditional fruit cake, something that has stuck with me since I was a child, so I always get excited when I see couples push the boundaries. I have seen wedding cakes made of cheese, quirky grooms cakes, cupcakes, mini pavlovas and cakes on sticks. The sky’s the limit!
This week I spent the morning with wedding cake baker Kylie from Kylie Cakes to get a glimpse of the work the goes into each cake masterpiece. Kylie can multi task, that’s for sure! Needing to juggle a couple of orders while cakes cooled and fondants set, she was baking up a storm! Who knew there was an ideal time of day and humidity to work with fondant? I watched in awe as Kylie layered a cake, covered it in fondant, created some delicate flowers and whipped up a bride and groom.
It was like magic, if I blinked, I would have missed it. She worked with such speed, precision and passion and knows all the tricks of the trade. From traditional to quirky cakes, Kylie is in her element when she has the opportunity to custom design a wedding cake to suit your taste and style. She excels in personalizing bride and groom cake toppers to mimic you and your hubby to be and can add in your trusty dog or incorporate your hobbies and passions. It may be easier to choose a cake that you have already seen and want to duplicate, but why not sit down with someone with the experience to make you something truly unique for you and your groom!
And as if that wasn’t enough, located in Kylie’s garden outside the kitchen is her chicken pen where her daughter will collect the fresh eggs daily for all the cake baking. I was lucky enough to be sent home with some delicious cake tastings and a carton of huge fresh organic eggs.
There is no better way to edit cake photos than sitting eating cake, the mars bar mud cake is to die for! Yum!

Ms Gingham: How impressive is it to be using fresh, organic eggs in the cakes! I love this behind the scenes look! Thanks to Jo for putting this together and to Kylie Cakes for allowing us into their workplace!
Jo from FotoJOJO says: “It’s all about Story Telling. I strive to tell an entire story in just one image, to know when less is more and when it’s not, all the while still remaining as unobtrusive as possible. Each couple has a different connection and a different way of expressing themselves so it is so important to me that I let those relationships and emotions shine naturally, without my interference.”
