With springtime almost upon us it’s natural to start thinking about swapping out the dark colour palettes in your wardrobe for lighter, warmer tones; especially if your wedding is coming up. And if you need some direction, look no further than the colour that was made especially for boys: blue.
Blue has been a big hit on the European runways for summer 2013. Navy was present, as always, but there was also a lot going on with the lighter hues. Of course, the best shade of blue for you will depend on your hair, eye and skin colours; but in short, you can’t go wrong with blue. So if you’re feeling adventurous for the wedding season up ahead, here are three shades worth considering:
1. Sky Blue
Some might consider sky blue a bit girlie for suits, but Kate Moss didn’t seem to mind when her beau Jamie Hince rocked up to their wedding in a sky blue suit by Stefano Pilati for Yves Saint Laurent. And when you have a supermodel’s nod of approval, there’s really no need to feel shy.
However, if you prefer to use the colour in a more subtle manner, check out these washed out sky blue Oxfords by Maison Martin Margiela that have just arrived with our friends at Mr Porter.
2. Curaçao Blue
Now this is a girlie blue, but paradoxically it would take some kind of cojones to wear the colour whose name is synonymous with 90% of cocktails from the ‘80s. However, if you’re planning a beach wedding at Club Tropicana, a place called Kocomo, or good old Hamilton Island, Curaçao Blue could be just the ticket, so why not pop down to Salvatore Ferragamo to check out their wares.
A whole suit in this statement colour might be a little extreme for a wedding so my recommendation is to go with either a jacket or pants.
3. Petrol Blue
If you lean towards the more traditionally conservative shades of blue, this season has a treat for you in the form of petrol blue. Petrol takes a detour from navy with more grey in the mix plus tints of green. This gives the colour an eye-catching, sophisticated edge and something of a Prussian military feel.
As with all shades of blue, you can’t go wrong with a crisp white shirt and brown or tan shoes as the perfect partners. But for a sportier look, consider a pair of pristine white sneakers like these Achilles low tops from Common Projects.
