So you think that Brides always wore white wedding dresses? Think again.
Traditionally brides wore blue as it was considered to be the colour of purity, but in 1840 when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert she broke all the rules and wore white, this was considered to be new and very different so much so that everybody who was anybody copied it and so it has stuck with us ever since. This is also where you get the ‘something blue’ in the wedding rhyme.
Below is an image of a wedding dress from 1864. It was auctioned by Augusta Auctions and was described as “Two-piece periwinkle blue with woven black windowpane and pleated self-fabric & black bead trim. Bodice with double waist points in front, small peplum, and faux buttons of silk & jet.”
Ms Gingham says: A fascinating piece of history here! So if you’re considering a coloured dress for your wedding and people are trying to talk you out of it you can say that it’s traditional!!
