Happy Polka Dot Hot Spot day! The place where we talk about the sometimes controversial, sometimes just a hard decision parts of weddings!
Today’s hot spot isn’t a life or death situation, but it’s still a decision females make as they work out their wedding style and what look they want for their day. The veil casts a mysterious shadow over this. Will the bride wear one? Or will she go without?
It baffles me that it’s a big thing for a bride to go without a veil, but at the same time, I am a veil lover. I’m a stickler for wedding traditions in my own mind so I adore it when a beautiful veil is a top the head.
Like with coloured wedding gowns, I wish my own sense of self was strong enough to go without, but it never has been me.
What about you? Veil or no veil?
I adore veils on other women, but for me, they aren’t something I’d normally go for. The fiancé, on the other hand, loves the tradition of a veil and has this very specific picture in his mind of what he has always wanted the woman he will marry to look like as she walks down the aisle. So we will be compromising, and I will have a small blusher/birdcage veil.
I love the birdcage as a compromise! It always strikes me the very strong opinions Mr P has on things that I would never have thought. I find it enlightening actually!
I also didn’t wear a veil. It would have felt silly – we were married in a restaurant, and we walked each other in. While I think they can look beautiful, I struggled with the idea of doing anything just “for the sake of it.” I wanted our wedding to feel like us, which meant i wanted to look like me. Haven’t regretted it for a second 😉
I love birdcage veils though Amie – a perfect compromise!
I love that you walked each other in! I agree too though, a veil, like a dress (though in some ways I say throw it out the window and wear a ballgown in Bali) has to suit the style of your wedding and a restaurant is much more casual than a church and ballroom.
Love your thoughts!
I did try on a veil but it was just “too much” with my gown. I started laughing at my own reflection… I’m not sure that’s quite the reaction you are meant to have. I had glorious fresh flowers in my hair though. Funnily enough, my mum had done something very similar in the 70s with a beautiful garland of tuber roses, so it was actually “tradition” for me to go without a veil!
In saying that, I LOVE a veil… just not on me! 😉
Your hair was one of my favourite ways to do “bridal” without a veil. I love fresh blooms and they looked stunning!
Birdcage veil here too! I’m making mine with a few bits and pieces to match the rest of our dresses. I have really short hair so I can’t have much of hairstyle… accessories are my friend 🙂
I’ve been enjoying your sneak peeks as I’ve seen them! Clearly all the Dotties are not wearing full length veils! Can’t wait to see what you do with your accessories 🙂
I’m having a garden wedding and will wear a veil. I will be removing mine after the ceremony and photos. For the reception I will be putting on a vintage Jenny Packham headpiece. I like the idea of having both… ( I wanted to feel bridal for the ceremony)
