Jody and Gavin

I love this afternoon’s wedding. It’s so crisp and fresh but has a beautiful vintage flair to it and is filled with vintage touches- beautiful blooms, beautiful papers and even a vintage camera!

Gavin tells the story of how he and Jody met. “Back in 2004 Jody’s housemate was a good friend of mine.  I had recently returned from Europe and Jody had just got back from Nepal, it was a stinking hot summer (as they are in Brisbane) and we started spending lots (and lots) of time together.

I proposed from a rooftop restaurant in Istanbul overlooking the Bosporus, the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. It was the end of a fantastic five-week trip through the Middle East and a great way to start our life together.”

Photos this afternoon are by Studio Sixty Photography who have produced such gorgeous photos of Jody and Gavin’s vintage inspired wedding. Gavin is a keen photographer himself and was avidly interested in the fun cameras Jason of Studio Sixty had in his collection!

Gavin and his groomsmen wore suits from The Cloakroom. Gavin says “I just remember thinking how fun it all was and just being totally and utterly happy.”

Jody wore a softly flowing gown from Lisa Ho and her bridesmaids wore grey knee-length gowns from Lotus 76.

Handmade paper decorations filled the building. “We made decorative rosettes out of paper with the same pattern we used for our invitations as well as old pages from 1970s Mills & Boon novels with tales of romance in the Middle East (as our proposal was in Istanbul).  We also produced a newspaper, featuring the mast-head of the newspaper my dad used to run, instead of a formal order of service booklet. I had a crossword, a lamington recipe (Lord Lamington once lived in Old Government House) and tongue-in-cheek gossip articles.  These features just reinforced out vintage theme as well and reflected the history of the place and our personal histories as well.  Given that Gavin is an archivist it seemed fitting that our wedding reflected this.”

Jody and Gavin held their ceremony and reception at Old Government House in Brisbane. Gavin says ” This grand old building was the inspiration for our overall vintage theme. It is a beautiful old building rich in history and we felt really sure about it the minute we walked in. It was special without feeling superficial. And having the reception and ceremony in the one venue meant we could transition quickly from one to the other.”

Gavin’s favourite memory was an intimate one. “Although it wasn’t our official first dance, the most memorable moment of the day was dancing in the library at Old Government House alone together, just moments before we were introduced as husband and wife.”

Flowers Of The World styled the bouquets and beautiful green and white centrepieces. The reception was held inside at Old Customs House with catering by Brett’s Wharf.

In lieu of a traditional wedding cake, Jody and Gavin served a cupcake tower from Couture Cupcakes.
