There is a day Australia remembers called Ash Wednesday. In 1983, 47 Victorians lost their lives due to bushfires. This weekend, Australia has a new and very sad memory – Black Saturday. I wrote last week that Victoria was having a heatwave. Saturday was the hottest day for Victoria on record. It also has led to one of the biggest tragedies Australia has seen. Massive bushfires covered the state and at last count over 750 homes have been lost and 128 people confirmed dead. Entire towns such as Kinglake and the beautiful historic Marysville have been wiped out. The count is still just beginning (many areas are still under threat or are too unsafe to access) and the true toll of the fires will not be realised for days. If you would like to donate to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal you can visit the Red Cross website (be patient, the site is getting overloaded) here. If you’re in Australia you can also give blood. For mores ways to help visit the ABC Website. On Twitter, 774melbourne is providing live updates. My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected. Normal posting will resume tomorrow.
It is just heartbreaking. I can’t stop watching the news even though it is making me so sad.
This is so so sad…I have been thinking about you, wondering if you are ok – so I’m glad to hear you are, but so sad for the people who lost their lives. I will keep you, your friends, family and fellow Australians in my prayers…I’m without words, it’s terrible. Please take care of you, my blogging buddy!
Sending prayers from the States,
Jaime
It’s even more horrifying when you think that the fires might’ve been started by someone deliberately.
Like Bonnie, I am glued to the computer obsessively checking for updates even though it’s heartbreaking every time the death toll is updated.
This is so awful! I’m so sad to hear this. My heart goes out to all those people who have been affected by this and i’m reminded to be truly grateful for every minute we have… life is too short and tragedies happen too often! My prayers to them!
So sorry to hear that you are going through this!!! My prayers are for all of you!
Sending prayers from the States. I recently found my childhood Australian penpal on facebook, she is from Riddells Creek, VIC. I hope all her friends and family are OK!
