Julia & Mateesha

I’m a little smitten with Julia and Mateesha’s engagement photos. Set on the streets of Hobart, the pair joined photographer Nina Hamilton to capture photographs that were not filled with the fuss, not filled with anything less than just being together. And that? That’s what it is truly about, after all.

The pair met while studying, telling the tale. “A mutual friend organised a last-minute study session the morning before an English exam in college. We didn’t meet again until the next year when we both enrolled in the same psychology class.”

On what she loves about Julia, Mateesha tells “Absolutely everything. But mostly, how deeply she loves.”

On what she loves about her future wife Mateesha, Julie remarks, “Her caring heart, witty personality and her morning kisses.”

Julia tells of the proposal “We both knew we wanted to get married. We went into a jeweller one afternoon looking at rings and ended up choosing our own rings for each other. We both wanted the experience of being proposed to, so we planned surprise proposals.” Mateesha chimes in “There was a Shakespeare in the Park production of Romeo & Juliet in the Botanical Gardens, which I thought was perfect because Julia loves Shakespeare. I asked her to marry me just before the play began.”

Says Julie “After Mateesha proposed I was itching to do the same so I planned for us to catch a bus to one of our favourite places, Long Beach. We had a picnic and drinks. I pretended I wanted to take a nice photo of us in front of the water so I set my phone on a timer but really pressed record. With her back to the camera I pulled out a little blue box and got down on one knee, she turned around and luckily said yes.”

The brides to be tell “The photos really capture who we are in our relationship, which is silly and laughing at each other, but also really loving and tender.”
